BIDDING INCREMENTS
1. Bidding Increments are the amount that the bid must increase by to be considered a valid bid. Some auction houses (like e-bay) use dollars and cents, so a bid of 99.99 will beat a bid of 99.00. This strategy is entertaining and may work well in a general public forum when an item’s value is unknown and it is offered without reserve.
The Harmer family has been in the auction business for over 75 years. We know what a lot should bring, and we respect your time. While it may be fun to think that a $5.00 bid will win you $5 Columbian never hinged unused, the reality is that there are hundreds of people with the same thought. After 20 minutes of bidding, the lot will arrive at an appropriate sale price.
At Harmers, we start the item off at a price we feel is appropriate, and we set our increments accordingly. This means the next bid, MUST increase by the specified amount. Occasionally, the auctioneer will consider a 1/2 increment bid.
THE AUCTIONEER HAS FULL DISCRETION OVER THE BIDDING INCREMENTS AND CAN CHANGE THEM AS HE/SHE SEES FIT.
Our Increments are as follows:
up to $300 $10
$300 – $600 $25
$600 – $1,500 $50
Over $1,50 approx 5%
